The Coach’s Box

If you like Australian Football and you enjoy a tactical challenge, then this is the game for you. Step into The Coach’s Box and organise your team on the field, try to get possession of the ball and decide on the best path to goal. Can you lead your team to victory?

Two coaches each control teams of 18 players. Prior to the start of the game they can choose where to position their players around the field.

There are two player types, which reflect their abilities to successfully receive a pass, or shoot for goal.

Just as in Australian Football, play starts at the centre of the ground. A simulated dice roll decides who takes possession. A coach can always make a strategic move of their players whenever they gain possession. They also decide where they would like to pass the ball. The success of this pass is based on the length of the pass, who is receiving the pass and if this player has an opponent.

The simulated roll of a dice then determines whether their passes meet their target. A coach keeps possession on a successful roll, with the aim to eventually pass the ball to their forwards. Once within scoring range, the coach can nominate to shoot for goal.

A turnover sees possession change hands, and on these occasions, coaches can move players around the field.

As the dice are rolled, Time Cards occur randomly, and are available to the coaches to use during the course of the game. These give coaches an edge in the tactical battle. They also act as a counter to the length of the game.

Play continues until the final card appears. This is the Siren Card. Coaches can keep playing another passage of play, or finish when it suits them. The highest scorer is declared the winner.

This is a great game for people to think and create. When a coach takes control, they have to weigh up their options and choose the best strategy to take them to within reach of their goal. Each decision is based on a percentage chance, and coaches must balance their own attacking tactics, with a plan to stop their opponent.

This game was created for people who have a passion for a contest, enjoy the chance to take a risk, and test their mental skills against a willing opponent.
